This document provides an overview of pay equity legislation and statutory mechanisms addressing gender wage discrimination enacted by the Canadian government and provincial governments.

However, pay equity is only legally required in separate pay equity legislation for the public sector in:

• Manitoba
• Nova Scotia
• New Brunswick
• Prince Edward Island

And for the public and certain private sectors in:

• Quebec
• Ontario
